American Public Education Announces Minority Investment in Fidelis Education to Further Enhance Student Engagement and Successful Learning Outcomes

May 9, 2013

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May. 9, 2013-- American Public Education, Inc. (NASDAQ: APEI) – parent company of online learning provider American Public University System (APUS), which operates through American Military University (AMU) and American Public University (APU), today announced that it has made a $4 million minority investment in Fidelis Education.

Fidelis was founded in 2011 in Palo Alto, Calif., to build a solution to the challenges of military-to-civilian career transition. It is currently developing an innovative software platform for students, faculty and staff to interact in meaningful ways outside the classroom.

“APUS believes the Fidelis platform will lead to greater student satisfaction and degree completion by assisting military service members and working adults in completing their online degrees, as well as supporting them in planning for successful career transitions,” said Dr. Sharon van Wyk, APUS executive vice president and COO. “As an investor and partner, APEI believes the enhanced student experience and support services will also benefit online learners at many other institutions,” said Dr. Wallace E. Boston, APEI president and CEO.

“When we started building our platform and working with university partners, they told us that our interactive tools would help both their civilian and military students more effectively engage with their peers,” said Gunnar Counselman, Fidelis founder and CEO. “In partnership with American Public Education, we are now working to develop our platform as a service for all types of educational organizations to assist them in optimizing their student digital learning experience.”
