CHARLES TOWN, W. Va--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May. 2, 2012-- American Public University System (APUS) today announced that Dr. Phil Ice, vice president of research and development, has been honored by the United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA) for Outstanding Leadership by an Individual. USDLA, the nation’s leading distance learning organization, presents the prestigious international award annually to individuals engaged in the development and delivery of distance learning programs.

"As a premier organization for the entire distance learning profession, we honor Dr. Phil Ice as a leader in the industry," said Dr. John G. Flores, executive director of USDLA. “Dr. Ice has raised the bar of excellence and we recognize his ongoing contributions on behalf of American Public University System to the distance learning industry."

The USDLA Awards were created to acknowledge major accomplishments in distance learning and to highlight those distance learning instructors, programs, and professionals who have achieved and demonstrated extraordinary results through the use of online, videoconferencing, satellite and blended learning delivery technologies.

"I’ve had the good fortune to work closely with Dr. Ice on many of his pioneering industry initiatives on the cognitive impact of new and emerging technologies in online learning environments,” said APUS President and CEO Dr. Wallace E. Boston. “I’m very proud to congratulate him on this well-earned recognition of his significant contributions to our industry,”

The award marks the latest industry laurels for Dr. Ice, who received the Wagner Award for Innovation in Distance Learning Administration in 2011 and three Effective Practice of the Year Awards (2007, 2009 and 2010) from the Sloan Consortium, which also recognized his leadership of an APUS team with the Gomory Award for Data Driven Quality Improvement in 2009. Dr. Ice’s vision for the future of technology in higher education has covered the use of technology-mediated feedback, which has been adopted by more than 50 institutions of higher education in five countries. It also encompasses multi-level institutional assessment techniques and application of semantic analysis for mapping institutional learning assets.

Dr. Ice has conducted more than 200 peer-reviewed and invited presentations and workshops, as well as authored more than 30 publications related to the integration of emerging technologies in eLearning. He is also involved with seven other researchers in the US and Canada in numerous other research initiatives related to the Community of Inquiry Framework.
