Program Developed in Conjunction with the U.S. Coast Guard
CHARLES TOWN, W.Va., Apr 26, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) --American
Military University (AMU) introduced today a concentration in Maritime
Law Enforcement for its Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice
program. AMU developed the concentration in response to its selection by
the U.S. Coast Guard as one of 10 universities nationwide to participate
in its new Maritime Law Enforcement College Partnership Program.
AMU is a member institution of American Public University System (APUS),
an accredited, online, university system serving more than 60,000
working adults studying worldwide. APUS offers 76 undergraduate
and graduate degree programs in an affordable and flexible format.
The new Maritime Law Enforcement concentration is designed for students
who wish to develop a better understanding of the policy and operational
strategies used to ensure border and coastal security. In addition to
the B.A. in Criminal Justice degree program requirements, the
concentration includes courses in hazardous materials, border, coastal
and port security, terrorism, national security, and maritime law. The
program is intended to prepare students for a wide range of careers
within the criminal justice field, and at the same time provides
professional development to those already within the discipline. Its
interdisciplinary approach provides students with a sound knowledge base
in the areas of U.S. law enforcement, criminology, investigations, law,
and community relations.
"With our B.A. in Criminal Justice with a concentration in Maritime Law
Enforcement program, AMU is proud to help those who enforce our maritime
laws and protect our borders complement their U.S. Coast Guard
training," said Constance St. Germain-Driscoll, J.D., Director of AMU
Criminal Justice and Legal Studies programs. "This concentration
provides students with the education to meet the country's
ever-expanding maritime mission, enables Coast Guard law enforcement
professionals to gain valuable educational credit for their training and
skills gained on active duty, and broadens students' knowledge base in
this specialized field."
The U.S. Coast Guard's Maritime Law Enforcement College Partnership
Program was developed by the Coast Guard Force Readiness Command, the
Maritime Law Enforcement Academy (MLEA) and the Coast Guard Institute in
collaboration with 10 colleges and universities, including APUS.
APUS is committed to keeping the cost of attendance low with an
undergraduate tuition rate of $250 per credit hour. Classes start
monthly, with courses offered in 8-week sessions. For more information
