CHARLES TOWN, W.Va., Sep 24, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Representative Gerald "Gerry" E. Connolly, VA-11, met recently with
officials from American
Public University System (APUS) in their Manassas, Va. offices to
learn more about how APUS's online education is meeting the needs of
active duty service members and veterans.
Rep. Connolly took the opportunity to walk through the university's
online learning experience and better understand the rich learning
environment available in today's online platforms. APUS is an online
university system that includes American
Military University and American
Public University and is one of the largest providers of education
to the U.S. Armed Forces.
Rep. Connolly is supporting recently introduced legislative amendments
to the Post 9/11 GI Bill that would allow service members attending
online schools to receive the housing allowances the current bill
prohibits them from receiving.
According to a study released in May 2009 by the U.S. Department of
Education (DOE), students in online learning environments, on average,
performed better than those taking the same course through face-to-face
instruction.
Rep. Connolly's district includes Fairfax County, Prince William County
and Fairfax City. A significant number of active duty and retired
military reside in the 11th District.
American Public University System includes American Public
University and American Military University and educates more than
50,000 adult learners worldwide. APUS's relevant curriculum,
affordability and flexibility helps working adults pursue degrees in
subjects ranging from homeland security to management and liberal arts.
A university book grant supplies textbooks at no cost for eligible
undergraduate students. For more information, visit www.apus.edu.
