American Public University System Trustee, Lieutenant General Richard G. Trefry, Has U.S. Army Achievement Award Created in His Honor

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Apr. 24, 2009-- The United States Army has announced the creation of The Lieutenant General Richard G. Trefry Lifetime of Service Award. Created in honor of American Public University System Trustee, Lieutenant General Richard G. Trefry (USA, Ret.), the award can be presented to current or former members of the Army and Department of the Army Civilians who show a lifetime of extraordinary service to the Army, support and promote the professional advancement and development of military and civilian personnel, and impact the Army at large through a commitment to innovation and leadership.

LTG Trefry’s career began as an enlisted member of the U.S. Army in 1943. He was commissioned in 1950 after graduating from the United States Military Academy and served an additional 33 years in uniform. His career included work as the Inspector General of the U.S. Army under three Chiefs of Staff and Secretaries of the Army. He retired from active duty in 1983, but continued his service to the Army and the Nation by serving in the White House as the Military Assistant to the President of the United States. He also chaired a group that resulted in the establishment of the Army Force Management School (AFMS) in 1995.

“LTG Trefry’s career is significant not only for the magnitude and diversity of his personal achievements, but for the tremendous impact his life’s work and service have had on generation after generation of Soldiers and Department of the Army Civilians,” the U.S. army noted in the award dedication brochure.

LTG Trefry holds a B.S. degree in Military Science from the United States Military Academy, West Point, is a graduate of the Command and General Staff College, and the Army War College. He currently serves as a Senior Fellow for the Institute for Land Warfare in the Association of the U.S. Army and is Program Manager for Army Force Management School at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Trefry teaches and speaks frequently at service schools, public and private organizations, and at public and private schools and colleges.
