American Public University Partners with National Park Service

Offers Teachers Course to Commemorate 150th Anniversary of John Brown's Raid on Harpers Ferry, WV

Charles Town, W.Va. (Vocus) June 11, 2009 -- American Public University () (APU) is partnering with the Harpers Ferry National Historic Park to offer teachers of grades 4 through 12 a 3-credit, online graduate history course in connection with an onsite, free summer workshop offered by the National Park Service. APU is offering the course with a $720 scholarship toward the $825 tuition. The course and workshop will cover John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry, WV in 1859, and its implications regarding abolition, the Civil War, civil rights, and regional history.

Charles Town, WV-based APU is collaborating with the National Park Service on the special program to mark the sesquicentennial of the historic event, and to introduce teachers to APU's accredited online university's course offerings.

Enrollment is limited to 25 teachers for the July 12-14 workshop in Harpers Ferry, WV and the APUS online course HIST680-Special Topics, with applications due Friday, June 26, 2009. Applications are open to 4th - 12th grade teachers who would like to incorporate the knowledge gained into classroom instruction. Course registrants are required to attend the workshop as it is a component of the course. Meals and local accommodations are not included.
