American Public University System Appoints New Directors For Programs in History & Military Studies, Marketing, Finance, Hospitality Management, Public Policy and Intelligence Studies & National Security

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va., May 05, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) --American Public University System (APUS) today announced the appointment of six program directors who will oversee the University System's programs in Graduate History and Military Studies; Marketing; Accounting; Hospitality Management; Political Science; and the Master's program in Intelligence Studies and National Security. The programs are available at both APUS member institutions, American Military University and American Public University.

The new full-time APUS program directors include:

  • Brenda Harper, Ph.D. and Ed.D. (BA, Marketing) - An associate professor of business management at Athens State University (AL) for the past seven years, Dr. Harper has also consulted for numerous Fortune 1000 companies and government agencies. She holds doctorates in Organizational Leadership and Education from Nova Southeastern University, and an MBA from the Florida Institute of Technology.
  • Barbara Kaplan, Ph.D. (MA and Graduate Certificate Programs in History, Military History, and Military Studies)-- Dr. Kaplan previously served as an academic associate dean at Montgomery College (MD) and Stevenson University (MD), and was the founding director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at the University of Maryland University College. With a Ph.D. in History from the University of Maryland and an M.A. in History from the University of Chicago, she is the author of two books and numerous journal articles.
  • Phillip LaSala, Ph.D. (BA, Political Science; MA, Political Science; and MA, Public Administration) - A retired U.S. Air Force officer with more than 20 years of service at the Pentagon and around the world, Dr. LaSala holds an undergraduate degree from the Air Force Academy, a master's degree in National Security Studies from Georgetown University, and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.
  • Elena Mastors, Ph.D. (MA, Intelligence Studies and MA, National Security Studies) - Dr. Mastors is a recognized expert in political psychology and counterterrorism, having served as an Associate Professor in the Department of National Security Decision Making at the Naval War College, and as Chief of the Strategic Assessments Division for the Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence at the Pentagon. She has authored books and articles, and made numerous presentations on a range of related topics, and holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from Washington State University, and an M.A. in Political Science from the University of South Florida.
  • Janette Roy, Ph.D. (BA, Hospitality Management)- With more than 25 years of experience in hospitality management and education, Dr. Roy previously served as assistant professor of Hospitality Management at both Central State University (OH) and Grand Valley State University (MI). Earlier, she served in a number of senior marketing roles for a number of Chicago-based hospitality organizations, including the Chicago Convention & Tourism Bureau, McCormick Place, Navy Pier, and several hotels. She holds a Ph.D. in Organization and Management focused on Hospitality Leadership, from Capella University, Minneapolis, and a Master's of Science in Human Resources Management and Development, from National Louis University in Chicago.
  • William Whitley, Ed.D. (Finance and Economics Courses and A.A., Accounting) - Dr. Whitley, CPA, CIA, is an experienced educator, business owner and financial executive. Previously, he was a professor Accounting with Athens State University (AL) and as adjunct professor in the Master's Program in Business for the Florida Institute of Technology, as well as Marin Methodist College (TN). He has served in a variety of general and financial management roles for businesses including a trucking company, a construction firm, utilities, and a CPA firm. He holds a doctorate in Education from the University of Alabama and an MBA from the University of Houston.
