December 18, 2009
Recipients Receive Scholarships for Associate, Bachelor's and Master's Degrees
CHARLES TOWN, W.Va., Dec 18, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- American Public University (APU) has awarded 14 full academic scholarships to deserving winners from around the country as part of APU's commitment to the Private Sector Career Stimulus Package initiative. APU participated in the Career Stimulus Package to help educate, empower and employ adult learners and enable recipients to develop their careers or find meaningful employment. APU is a member institution of American Public University System (APUS), an accredited, affordable, online university system that educates more than 50,000 adult learners worldwide.

"Our programs are structured with the working adult in mind," said Wallace E. Boston, Jr., President of American Public University. "APU is among the most affordable online universities and we seek to expand access to higher education nationwide."

David Thatcher, an early scholarship recipient from Le Mesa, Calif., is looking to advance his career in Information Technology by obtaining a four-year degree. "I'm very excited," said Thatcher upon receiving his scholarship award. "This is going to be great for me and my family."

The comprehensive Career Stimulus Package offered adults access to online education programs, including up to $4 million in full-tuition scholarships from partnering institutions, including APU, and job shadowing programs at participating U.S. companies. A 40-city RV tour ended in Los Angeles on September 9, 2009 and offered free career coaching sessions and Education Stations where prospective students applied for scholarships online, on the spot.

APU has awarded a total of 14 academic scholarships for new, first-time APU students to be applied in one of 76 Associate, Bachelor's and Master's degree programs. Nearly all costs are covered. Associate and Bachelor's degree scholarships will cover tuition with a university book grant providing course reading materials at no cost to eligible undergraduate students. Master's degree scholarships will cover tuition only. Each student will have the opportunity to participate in an internship program provided by one of the Career Stimulus Package participating companies.
