American Public University System's Emergency and Disaster Management Program Receives Specialty Accreditation from the Foundation of Higher Education

August 28, 2008
APUS First Online University System to Achieve this Distinction

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va., Aug. 28 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Foundation of Higher Education (FoHE) recently granted American Public University System's (APUS) (http://www.apus.edu) Emergency and Disaster Management program specialty accreditation. FoHE develops standards designed to strengthen the disaster/emergency management and homeland security profession. APUS is the first online university to receive specialty accreditation in this area from the FoHE. The Emergency and Disaster Management program is available at member institutions American Public University (http://www.apu.apus.edu) and American Military University (http://www.amuonline.com).

APUS is an online university system that serves more than 30,000 working adults in 50 states and more than 100 foreign countries. It offers 73 online undergraduate and graduate degree programs (http://www.apus.edu/APUS/Academics/index.htm) in an affordable and flexible format.

To be considered for specialty accreditation from the FoHE, a program must be subject to an in-depth analysis with a team of assessors. The team conducts student interviews and an in-depth examination of program objectives and student outcomes. The process concludes with an on-site visit with an assessment team.

"APUS specializes in educating those in public service professions," said Wallace E. Boston, Jr., President of APUS. "We take pride in the fact that APUS's Emergency and Disaster Management program is recognized among its peers as being among the top higher educational emergency management institutions in the United States."

FoHE measures a university's performance against 23 Standards of Excellence. These standards are measured against general education programs, emergency management curriculum, and overall resources that impact educational quality. In order to be accredited, a program must comply or partially comply with all 23 Standards of Excellence. The APUS program was successful in each of these indicators. Additionally, FoHE determined the quality of APUS student performance was one of the determinant factors that ultimately led to APUS achieving accreditation.
